It acquired a separate statehood in 1979. The Raja Sahed Dr. P.V.G. Raju who inherits the socialistic fervor and the spirit of religious tolerance from his ancestors, renounced his Zamindari without taking any compensation and their fort is now entirely became the citadel of education which houses on of the oldest colleges(Maharaja College 1879) in India. The social reformer, Sri Gurajada, the Poet singer Sri Adibhatla Narayana Das, the great wrestler Kodi Rama Murthy, the imaginative poet Sri Devulapalli Krishna Sastry were associated, with the college in some form.The talented musicians Dwaram Venkata Swami Naidu, Saluri Rajeswara Rao and of Smt. P.Suheela garu hail from this place. Many eminent personalities have added new dimensions of glory to Vizianagaram.

With profound reverence to this cause RK Degree college, most fabulous college for UG Courses in coastal Andhra Pradesh has been established in the year 2001 by recognizing and affiliated by Andhra University.
RK educational institutions has expanded its horizons by establishing RK Junior College in the year 2005. In terms of academic programs, faculty, infrastructure and good environmental facilities to be able to successfully address the changing and challenging needs of the society with nearly two decades of track records in Under Graduate courses, it has been scattering the “Rays of Knowledge” with the slogan of “Tmasoma Jyothirgamaya”, We are nourishing and enriching nearly 2000 students in Degree college and nearly 700 students in Junior college stream.
